Healing from trauma can feel like navigating a maze in the dark. You want to find your way out, but the path isn’t always clear. I’ve walked numerous people along this path, and I want to share some effective trauma recovery techniques that can help light the way. Whether you’re dealing with personal wounds or relationship struggles, these approaches can offer comfort, clarity, and real progress.
Understanding Trauma Recovery Techniques
Trauma recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. It’s a deeply personal process that requires patience, kindness, and the right tools. It is not necessarily an easy journey. Below are some effective techniques that can help you regain control and find peace.
1. Mindfulness and Grounding Exercises
When trauma happens, your mind can feel like it’s spinning out of control. It can be hard to quieten or focus the racing thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness helps you anchor yourself in the present moment. Simple grounding exercises, like focusing on your breath or noticing five things you can see, hear, or touch, can calm your nervous system. Being mindful can be done when doing everyday tasks - for example, when washing up, noticing the temperature of the water and the smell of the soap. It doesn't need to be silence, closed eyes and chanting.
Try this: Sit comfortably, take a deep breath, and slowly count to five as you inhale. Hold for a moment, then exhale to the count of five. Repeat a few times. It’s like giving your brain a gentle hug.
2. Journal Your Feelings
Writing down your thoughts and emotions can be freeing. It’s a safe space where you can express yourself without judgment. You don’t need to worry about grammar or style—just let your feelings flow onto the page. Maybe you want to doodle or get a bunch of craft materials (random stickers are a fave of mine) to express things through colour, shape and image instead of words. And it does not need to make sense!
Try to write for 10 minutes a day. You might be surprised how much clarity and relief this simple act can bring.

3. Seeking Professional Support
Sometimes, the best way forward is with a guide. A skilled therapist helps you unpack your experiences safely and develop coping strategies tailored to you. It may be that a traumatic experience has become 'stuck' and is affecting your day to day functioning, as well as how you feel about yourself. You may have received a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and you may be experiencing flashbacks to the experience in memories or dreams. In these cases it may be appropriate to use Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). This method helps to store the memory better, so it is not going to jump out at you uninvited. Practical Tips to Support Your Healing
Healing isn’t just about therapy sessions or exercises. It’s about creating a lifestyle that nurtures your well-being. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind:
Create a safe space: Whether it’s a corner of your home or a favourite park bench, find a place where you feel calm and secure.
Set small goals: Healing is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate tiny victories like getting out of bed or reaching out to a friend.
Stay connected: Isolation can deepen trauma. Reach out to trusted friends or support groups.
Practice self-compassion: Be gentle with yourself. Healing takes time, and setbacks are part of the process.
Engage in physical activity: Movement helps release tension and boosts mood. Even a short walk counts.
Remember, you’re not alone on this path. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress.
Embracing Your Journey with Hope and Courage
Trauma recovery is a journey filled with ups and downs. It’s okay to have days when you feel strong and others when you feel vulnerable. What matters is that you keep moving forward, one step at a time.
By combining mindfulness, journaling, professional support, and practical self-care, you’re building a toolkit that can help you face challenges with resilience. And if you ever feel stuck, remember that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Healing is possible even if it can be hard won. You deserve to live a life filled with connection and joy.
